THIS FRIDAY

Please join us as we host The City of Quincy Art Awards (sponsored by WGEM, Quincy Herald-Whig, Oakley-Lindsey Foundation, and the Quincy Society of fine Arts). The four awards recognize: Arts Organization, Business leadership, Individual artist teacher, and Individual volunteer leadership. The award gifts are appropriately pieces of artwork from local students. In addition, we’ll present our own award to the January Youth of the Month. Don’t let the fact that we’ll have a few extra guests keep you away. We hope to see you Friday at Quincy’s Finest Hour!

FRIDAY LAST

A great inside look at college officiating by our very own Ric Hinkamper. Ric spoke specifically and in great detail about instant replay – what plays are reviewable, the timing issues involved, and the training that precedes both. Ric showed us a few clips from one of his weekly training videos. Interesting to note that any play confirmed or overturned at the college level is done by the “replay official” while in the NFL that decision is made solely by the referee. Nice job, Ric. Perry Terwelp with the introduction.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I don’t have anything prepared, I’m sick, and I only came here to cough on the old guys.” Funeral Director Jared Haugh’s hilarious line as he started his tail twisting efforts. That was good but equally impressive was when he deadpanned to Chuck Venvertloh on the occasion of his 45th birthday, “Another birthday, huh? Don’t make it a habit.” I was still laughing about both comments throughout the weekend!

POINT TO PONDER

President Steve Green announced the resignations of seven Exchangites last week – Ted Awerkamp, Jerry Ebbing, Russ Gengenbacher, Dr. Frank Gianfriddo, Dr. Tom Klincar, Jason Mohr, and Tim Muehring. I believe some of these had previously been announced or at least were expected but the point is that seven men have been removed from our ranks and it is time to replenish. We have several great programs on the horizon as noted in the VIP DATES section; why not ask someone to join us for one of them and see if they are subsequently interested in joining?

THIS & THAT

Rev. Ron Fritts with the prayer while seeking a special blessing on referees/officials. As an ex-official himself, Rev. Ron knows the need. Fred Lauder led the pledge… John Johannes with a guest (whose name escaped me)… President Steve wishing everyone a Happy New Year and thanking Kevin Curran for his work with our Special Olympics Basketball Tournament and to all the folks involved in our 12/23 Christmas party at the Quincy Boat Club… President Steve also telling us about a thank you from the Kroc Center for our $500 donation to their (along with KHQA and others) toy drive prior to Christmas… Our condolences to Skip Reuter’s wife, Barb, and family on the loss of Barb’s brother, Michael Hussong. Michael lost his battle with cancer on December 30th. He lived in Normal, IL, and was only 60. Condolences as well to the Sonny Christner family on the loss of Sony’s mother, Alta Christner. Alta was 99 and lived all 99 in Brown County; where she was a blessing to many. Finally, we also extend our condolences to the Tappe family on the death of Tony Tappe. While Tony was not an Exchangite, he had several friends in our club and attended many of our club socials. Tony was only 50… Congratulations to Art Awerkamp on his promotion to “Head Drug Pusher” for Niemann Foods. Arts promotion will unfortunately mean a few more missed meetings… Sonny Christner had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (eight of hearts) so the pot grows – should be over $400 this week… President Steve to recap the activities of the 1/9 board meeting this week. Look for BIG NEWS from the Gus Macker Major Sponsor Committee at the meeting this week and in the Exchangite next week… Speaking of Macker, still looking for chairmen in 2013 and 2014. As noted by President Steve, the great work of the major sponsor committee lifts a huge load from the chairmanship. Please see President Steve if you are interested… 171 days until the Perry Terwelp administration and still no cell phone… That's all for now, 'til next time, may God’s love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
